I absolutely love the perks that I have for being the spouse of a Southwest Airlines employee. Since we get to fly free and now live closer to several cities in the west that we want to visit, we decided we should start doing day trips. Yesterday we were scheduled to take a 9am flight, but we didn't wake up till 8am. Since the flights were wide open all morning, we went to the airport and caught the 10:30 flight. It left a little late, so we didn't get into San Diego till right before noon. By then Kileigh was hungry, so we needed to catch the bus downtown to go have lunch. We had just missed the bus and were waiting almost 20 minutes before the next one arrived. We bought day passes for $5 each and got off the bus in the downtown area intending to go to an Irish pub. However, we got off at the wrong stop and thought it might be too far to walk, so we walked a few blocks down to the bay and and walked along the water until we found a place called The Fish Market. We wanted to sit outside, but it was a 30-40 minute wait. They were able to seat us outside in the bar area, which was fine for us. We ordered cheesy garlic bread as an appetizer and Kevin got a beer and I ordered root beer. Kevin ordered an albacore tuna melt, I ordered fish tacos, and we ordered mac & cheese for Kileigh. Unfortunately the garlic bread didn't arrive early and came with our lunch orders. It was delicious though. Nice and hot and garlicky just the way I like it. Kevin enjoyed his tuna melt and Kileigh enjoyed the fries. My fish tacos were delicious. We each had a little bit of Kileigh's mac & cheese, but were too full to finish it and didn't want to take it with as we were walking and then going back to the airport. It was a beautiful sunny day around 70 degrees. We enjoyed watching the coast guard boats boats, people in kayaks, and sailboats go by on the bay.
After lunch we walked along the boardwalk and through some shops at the Seaside Village. We discovered Kileigh had dropped blankie somewhere and had to retrace our steps. Luckily we found it almost immediately after going through 2 shops that were connected together. We decided to walk back towards downtown along the water and head to a coffee shop in Little Italy for gelato. We used the GPS on Kevin's phone to know where to go and found Caffe Italia easily after a short 10 minute walk. They sell coffee and blended drinks and baked goods, as well as sandwiches for lunch and gelato, which was delicious. Kevin got a large strawberry to share with Kileigh and I got a small espresso bean. We also got some bottled water to quench our thirst. We sat down in this little courtyard with about 1/2 dozen tables and enjoyed our dessert.
After our gelato stop, we headed to the bus stop and took the bus back to the airport. We were able to get on an earlier flight. Before we boarded, we ran into someone that Kevin used to work with in Phoenix. She is now a flight attendant and had taken her daughter to San Diego for the day as well to go to Sea World. Kileigh hit it off with Jordan well, so we'll have to try and arrange a playdate sometime. We landed and headed home. Kileigh was asleep before we even got home and slept through the whole night. We ended up going for a swim and soaking in the hot tub and came in just in time to watch our new favorite show, Bait Car. So funny to watch people steal cars and get busted by the cops.
